SALE!

I have sold "Snipe Hunting" to Apex Digest. It will be published in the April 2010 issue. I am super excited about this sale because it is my first SFWA qualifying short sale! Two more and I shift from associate affiliate to active.

Edit: Actually, I'm an affiliate member. With this sale I qualify as associate member and in two more sales, I'll be active. My mistake. I got them mixed up.

Even better, "Snipe Hunting" is the short story that inspired my upcoming anthology CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE URBAN KIND.

That's another market ticked off of my "Must sell to" list.

Second short fiction sale of the year. The Cost of Job Security goes to the Masters of Horror anthology by Triskaideka Books. This short story is dear because it is one of my many stories about something eating people. In this case, it's a mall. It is a short loosely inspired by Jeff and me getting locked in a mall in Indianapolis during GenCon 2008. It was a slightly unnerving and surreal experience.

Originally, I had offered to write the introduction for the anthology because I didn't have anything available to submit and I did not believe I had time to write something new. Then The Cost of Job Security came home to me. I turned it around and sent it to the anthology. A week later, I got the acceptance for the story and the rejection for writing the introduction.

That's the kind of rejection I can really smile at.

I am pleased to announce that I sold my science fiction story "The Prince of Artemis V" to Crossed Genres magazine for Issue #15. I'm particularly pleased with this sale for a few reasons:

  • First sale of 2010 - the first sale of the year is always special.

  • I am very fond of this short story.

  • It is set in my Hedari universe. (Same universe as my short fiction "Honoring the Dead" that is up on Wily Writers.)

  • Crossed Genres magazine was on my "must sell to" list for 2010.

Only four days into the new year. Not bad, eh?

Excuse me whilst I happy dance over here.

Since I was asked to do this for the Wily Writers group, I figured it could not hurt to put my 2009 writing industry accomplishments here.

It's official with all contracts signed. I have sold my 2007 NaNoWriMo book, The Little Finance Book That Could, to Lean Marketing Press with a publication date of February 2010. Unlike my other sales, this is my first non-fiction book. This is an autobiographical advice book on how I got myself out of debt—a relevant topic in today's economy.

The Little Finance Book That Could is a practical guide to becoming debt free while living a financially responsible lifestyle. In 1995, I was $40,000 in debt, making $26,000 a year. Five years later, I was debt free. In this book are the ten rules to becoming debt free that I followed and the five rules of financial responsibility that I continue to follow. This is a little book with a lot of common sense.

I am pleased as punch about this book sale. Book sales are always exciting but I really believe that the ten rules that got me out of debt can help other people, too. Use just one or all of them and you'll see a difference in your personal finances. I'm living proof of this.

    Oh Sweet!

Just got home from my first day working for NCsoft (7 hours of playing Aion to get the feel of it) and then seeing the new Harry Potter movie with my husband (fabulous). Then I found this:

    http://dqg-neal.livejournal.com/122522.html

It's the press release from Dark Quest Books about my forthcoming collection, In a Gilded Light.

It is a GOOD day to be a freelance author.

Jenn: Ok. Final question. When can I talk about this?
Neal: You can mention it the instant you put the signed contracts in the mail back to me.

Like all good authors, I have goals. I have just reached one of those goals and it is a big one. I just sold my personal collection of dark and twisted vignettes to Dark Quest Books.

Formerly known as "105 Freaky Friday Fictions," this collection is now known as "In a Gilded Light: 105 Tales of the Macabre" and currently sits at about 85,000 words. [livejournal.com profile] seanan_mcguire will be writing the Foreword.

I am excited beyond belief. I've sold two anthologies before (Grants Pass, Morrigan Books, August 2009 and Close Encounters of the Urban Kind, Apex Book Company, 2010) but this one is all mine. It's me, my twisted imagination and my way of looking at the world.

Why "In a Gilded Light"? Because I really like the word "gilded." It has several meaning but these two are my favorite:

B: to give an attractive but often deceptive appearance to

    C: archaic: to make bloody

These two meanings define the collection I have written. Things often are not what they seem and, yes, there is a high body count. I do need to rewrite the Preface to reflect the name change and I do have to get the edited manuscript to Seanan for her Foreword and to the publisher within 120 days. Work but work I will happily do.

I know this will not make me a star but I have stars in my eyes nonetheless.

I know this Lavie Tidhar novella for Apex will not edit itself, the kitchen still needs cleaning, the litter box needs emptying and life goes on. I know this. But, for this brief moment in time, I get to bask in the joy of "I sold a book!"

Last week, I was invited to submit to Wily Writers as an author. Just getting the invitation was an honor for me. I've wanted my work to go up on their website ever since I discovered the group at RadCon2009.

An invite to submit is never an automatic acceptance (I am not Stephen King and Neil Gaiman's unholy love child – yet). I submitted two stories and both were accepted for the site.

"Honoring the Dead" will appear on the Wily Writers site in text and audio MP3 on May 17th. - War is hell. No one knows that better that Guard Commander Waithe. What people do not talk about is the hell that comes after for those in command who survive. Not one to shirk his duty, Waithe performs his duty and honors his dead.

"Nothing Left to Salvage" will appear on the Wily Writers site in text and audio MP3 in the June to July timeframe. - Esda and Seairth believe they have found the salvage of a lifetime. It is a derelict ship that promises riches and an easy life. What they find is a horror beyond imagining that will end their salvaging days forever.

My first acceptance for 2009 goes to the Winter 2009 Relief anthology with my triptych flash fiction story set called "Three Flashes of Fang and Fur." I'm really pleased with this acceptance. Its proceeds go to help animals in need. I am a big propionate of such charities. Below is what J.K.Richárd posted about the TOC.

The following authors will have work appearing in the Winter 2009 Relief Anthology:

    Michael Jasper
    Michael Merriam
    Diane Payne
    Eugie Foster
    Mike Stone
    Jennifer Brozek
    Jetse de Vries
    *mystery author*

All proceeds generated from the Winter 2009 Relief Anthology will be donated to pet rescues and animal shelters affected by hurricane Ike.

Also, the editor, J.K.Richard will be matching proceed/donations dollar-for-dollar and donating matched monies to rescue efforts in Seattle, WA. Recently in Seattle 600 dogs were confiscated from several puppy mills, most of which are pregnant : http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2008665665_puppies24m.html

Yes! Yes! My zombie revenge story, "A Bite to Remember" made it into "The World is Dead" anthology scheduled for release in 2009 by Permuted Press. This is my first accepted zombie based story and it makes me pleased as punch.
