Apex Slush Pile Scorecard for 2009
  • 65 total submissions

  • 65 total submissions read.
  • 59 total rejections.
  • 05 total submissions currently kept for round-robin editorial evaluation.
  • 01 total submissions taken to the second level.
  • 00 published in Apex Magazine

  • 00 submissions to go.

I am finally up-to-date on my part of the Apex Magazine slush pile. We have five submissions editors looking at the Apex slush pile. We had a backlog but I believe we are back up-to-date on our usual 10-20 turn around on all submissions.

Interestingly enough, I am helping out with the novel slush, too. It's very odd being someone who really wants her own novel out there to have to make decisions on which novel the Apex Book Company should publish next. It's a big deal and I know it. I'm close enough to where these authors are that I know how much it means to them. It's hard but I do give each submission I read every bit of my attention and then I make what I believe is the right decision.

I never thought about keeping a scorecard like that. That's pretty cool! :) I'd hate to think how many rejections I've had total, though - that's pretty scary!!

Jason was calling me the Rejectionator earlier today...LOL

It makes me feel like I've made progress. I'm a goal-oriented person. Instead of saying, "I read slush for Apex." I can say, "I've read 65 stories in the last 21 days."

    Makes sense to me. ;)
