I think he got his hopes up. There was an email exchange that made him think you'd somehow just automatically accept his new piece. When you didn't, he was knocked down. Rather than admit that he was wrong to take the exchange that way or even that was wrong to think you two had formed a friendship, he went back to his default defensiveness and tried to knock you down in return.
