There were a couple of brilliant stories in this slush pile today. It made me very happy. Of course, there were a couple of stories that were in both the TEoP and Apex slush piles and at least one of those calls for submission say "no simultaneous submissions." Hmm. Something to think about when you are sending out your stories.


Apex Slush Pile Scorecard for 2009

The Apex slush pile is a very different beast than the TEoP slush pile. There's a lot more of it and a lot more to both dislike and like about it. Plus, the acceptance process doesn't end with me. Just starts. The other editors get to look at my "kept for rereads" list.

I read it first for Apex that does allow simultaneous subs (as far as I am aware) and I am not the sole editor there. Thus, I would not be the sole person making the decision. However, the story wasn't right for Apex.

When it came to TEoP, I read it with TEoP in mind only. In the end I did not accept it because there was no real compromise in the story for the protagonist. And it was obvious he didn't read my guidelines.

All this is not to say the story wasn't a good one. I read it all the way through, twice. I suspect it will place somewhere if he can find a market that wants what he is trying to sell.
